Here is the fifth edition of the D&D Game Summary. Please refer to the first edition for character backgrounds and geography, and to the second, third and fourth editions for their further exploits. Summary of "NorCal Campaign" Part 5 ----------------------------------- This adventure was based on "The Dark Tower of Calibar" which appeared in Dungeon Magazine issue #1. The plot framework was completely reworked. ADVENTURE NOTES--Day #14--05/28/93 Your Mission, Should You Choose to Accept It: (Dec 2, 696) After spending the previous month training, our group reassembled and set out to Barrington. Galen was tired of being the target of enemy attacks, and so he changed his garb from that of a mage to a merchant's outfit. After 3 days on the road, they arrived at Barrington. In Barrington, the group got a room at an Inn and began waiting for Prince Michael to show up. Melody spent some of this time playing music in the bar area, and Studly spent time gathering information on the streets. The characters managed to verify much of the information they learned at the end of the last session (see Campaign Summary Part 4). The Prince met them on the night following their arrival. He was glad that the group had accepted his plea to help acquire the stolen Crown of Stoutwall from Evil King Calibar's old hideout. He gave them a rough map describing the terrain and how to find the tower Calibar lived in. He told them that the tower seemed to be abandoned... no one ever went in or came out. He then warned the group that 30 to 40 orcs have been seen in the area when he was scouting. Finally, he recently got word that Calibar may have been working with an evil priest of some sort. Spike viewed the overthrow of Calibar as something that could benefit the Dwarves, and so he pledged his support to Michael. None of the other characters backed him in this. First Contact: (Dec 6, 696) The group set out in their wagon and traveled on the road for four days before reaching the campsite in the desert that Michael told them was the turn-off point. They then set out overland for a day and a half before they came to the foothills. Furnes helped fight the cold nights with an Everburning Log each evening. The wagon could go no futher, so the group removed two wheels from the wagon and hid them. They also set the horses loose. They set out overland. Later that day they came across a patrol of approximately 20 orcs. The group hid and planned to ambush the orcs when Galen decided to try the wand he acquired in the last adventure... a Wand of Fire! The fireball killed the entire group of orcs. A short while later they came to a point where they could see their target--Calibar's tower. The tower itself was an outcropping formed from cooled magma in a volcanic flue, and it was situated on a cliff face. The only road up to it went along the cliff and past a small fortress which protected the road. They saw some orcs go up the road and into the fortress. Assaulting the Orcs: (Dec 11, 696) They decided to wait until twilight, when vision and infravision are both impaired. Then, they tried to look like a band of orcs approaching the tower. Melody used her knowledge of the Orcish language to impersonate an orc guard. The disguise was good enough to get them within striking range. Melody then slept the orcs on the top of the fortress, and Rhodan used his massive strength to lift the gate that crossed the road. The orcs inside quickly grabbed their weapons and began firing arrows into the group. Furnes chose this time to use an Obscurement spell which quickly filled the air with a dense fog and made bows all-but-useless. The group moved quickly through the fortress under protection of the obscurement. Studly used the cover to backstab some orcs. Once Gloin helped Rhodan through the gate, Rhodan and Spike took up the charge into the unready orcs and sliced most of them up in just a few rounds. The fortress itself was of dwarven make. It was very solidly built and had metal doors. The last few orcs baricaded themselves behind one of these doors. Even Rhodan's strength was not enough to bring down the door. Furnes cast Heat Metal on the door and Protection from Fire on Rhodan. This weakened the door so that Rhodan was able to slam into it and warp it off its hinges. The scared orcs died quickly. The last orc hid behind a locked door which Studly picked the lock on. The orc was dispatched quickly and the characters found themself in the captain's chamber. The simple-minded orcs had even marked the secret door so they would not lose it. The group then grabbed the 240 gp, 300 sp, silver necklace (25gp) and jade ring (50gp). They left the 2500 cp behind. Cleaning Up: (Dec 11, 696) Melody, Furnes and Studly had tied up a few of the sleeping orcs earlier. Once the battle was over, they interrogated them. The orcs knew very little of what the characters wanted to know. They said that they've been here for a long while working for the Master, but that none of them had actually met the Master. Their fathers had when they did work for Him. Furnes then tossed one of the living ones off the roof and over the cliff to scare the others. It turned out the orcs did not know much, and so the last two were also tossed over the edge while still alive. Melody was disgusted by this activity. The group spent the next few hours of the night dragging all the orc bodies out of the place and tossing them off the cliff. The next day they spent cleaning out the tower, placing Fire Traps (Furnes) and keeping watch. In the panty they found a lot of food. Some of it was in beat-up boxes that were probably taken from other travellers, but most of it was in unmarked boxed. This is odd because most merchants mark their wares. ADVENTURE NOTES--Day #15--06/18/93 Great Balls O' Fire: (Dec 13, 696) The group approached the tower in the morning. The tower itself was about 110 feet tall and had a window near the top of the tower at each of the four compass points. Underneath each window were three wooden ledges about 20 feet apart. Melody got half way up the tower on a rope and almost to the second platform before she was suddenly attacked by a flying red-lizard from the roof of the tower. The lizard, which they later came to know as a Fire Drake, breathed fire on her, doing some minor damage but also severing the rope! Galen used Feather Fall to get her down safely. Three other Drakes joined the battle. Galen used Color Spray on one and Sleep on another. Rhodan sliced two of them in half, and much to his surprise they exploded when he did so! Spike used his crossbow on them. The two remaining ones flew away from the cliff and the characters in hopes that they would leave. The group wanted the Drakes dead and out of the way, though, so Galen Levitated up the tower toward the top in hopes that threatening their nest would bring them back. It did. One came on a straight attack at Galen who was floating 60 feet in the air. Galen used Magic Missles but they did not kill the Drake. It breathed fire on Galen and did enough damage to make him lose consciousness and fall 60 feet onto the rocks below. Melody quickly used Magic Missles to finish off the one that got Galen. The last one was hurt by several party members before it did a kamikaze dive and exploded itself on Studly. Furnes had to push his healing abilities in order to save Galen's life. Even so, Galen was unconscious for two days. The whole group retired to the fortress for 5 nights to heal themselves up. Galen did not fully heal from this encounter. He now has a permanent limp. Into the Tower: (Dec 18, 696) Once again the group approached the tower. This time Studly climbed up the tower using Spike's grappling hook. When he peered in one of the windows, he was attacked by some melted creature with long claws. Studly found he could do little to it, so he climbed up onto the roof. When Studly called down a description of the odd creature to the party, Furnes was seed consulting his ring (*see below*) for information, then he told the group that the monster was a Lava Child, and that metal weapons and armor would be useless against it. Galen then levitate up and using Furnes' Staff of Striking and under the effects of Furnes' Bless spell, engaged the Lava Child. During the battle, Melody climbed up a differnt face of the tower and used Sleep and Magic Missle to help defeat them. Then Studyly came down and helped toss the Lava Children out of the tower window to watch them shatter on the rocks below. Studly then set up a pully on the roof to help bring the other party members up. He also found some Fire Drake eggs which he pitched off the tower top. *The Ring*: Furnes acquired this ring during the second adventure the group went out on. It was identified as a Ring of Free Thought which granted immunity to sleep and charm and a +1 to intelligence. Well, it also turns out that the ring has intelligence and has been revealed to have a storehouse of encyclopedic knowledge. It also can act as a recorder of sorts because it has a perfect memory. When the ring first announced itself to Furnes by speaking, he was alarmed and then pleased. The ring would not (could not?) speak about its origins, and when Furnes asked what its name was it said "I have been known by many names, call me what you will". Hence, Furnes has called the Ring "Will". The ring itself is a gold band with a platinum laticework design all around it. Into the Depths: (Dec 18, 696) The Lava Child room was warm, but otherwise had no features. The party descended down a stairway to the next level. This level had but a single room on which murals decorated all the walls. The four scenes were: - A baby held in a woman's upheld arms as various gods smile upon the child - A teenage boy standing in a room illuminated by a sourceless light with a surprised older man in the background - A young man in long robes and carrying a rune-covered staff looking upon a dark tower in the shadowy background - A middle aged man holding the same staff greeting a guant, white-haired man in a black cloak while bats, rats and wolves prowl nearby The party speculated that this must be Calibar, and that the four images could be seasons in his life. The last one was also reminiscient of vampires. There was a single spiral staircase leading down from this point. It was very steep and dark, so Melody and Studly were sent ahead 30 feet to scout. After going down for a while, the stair entered a small room. At this point Studly found his boots stuck to the step he was on, then suddenly, he was attacked by the stairs with a deadly pummelling maneuver. The Killer Mimic managed to knock Studly out while Spike beat on it with Furnes' staff and Melody used Magic Missiles. Rhodan crawled close and dropped into the room below and helped finally kill the thing. They found nothing useful here, so they continued on down the stairway to the bottom. They found a trap door here. Spike opened it and took damage from the Fire Trap that had been placed on the door. No Thanks, We're Just Looking: (Dec 18, 696) The group found themselves at a crossroads. In one direction they found a storage room with food and other supplies. In another they found the remains of a burned out Green Slime. In a third they found a large room with a green gemstone in it. An attempt to enter the room paralyzed Spike, so they decided to leave the room for later. The fourth direction was a hallway where they found some writing on the wall "To those that come after me: I think the ring is the final key. I have learned this from my spells, but am too weak to go back for it. May you fare better". A short distance further down the hall, Studly and Melody fell into a 30 foot deep pit onto rusty spikes. The pit itself was covered with an illusion which did not dispell. The wounds looked bad so Furnes used Slow Poison on them. Studly was badly hurt so Melody put her Periapt of Wound Closure on him. At this point they got really paranoid and poked at everything before passing. They found a stone door with a depression shaped like a "C" with a lightning bolt across it. They also found another door that looked as if a Fire Trap had been set off on it before. Feeling pretty beat up, the group retreated to the top of the tower and spent the night in the warm Lava Child room. Furnes placed a Fire Trap on the trap door on their way up. ADVENTURE NOTES--Day #16--07/09/93 The Ring is the Key: (Dec 19, 696) Once again they descended into the mountain and this time they went to the door in the storeroom. Behind the door they found an Ettin. Spike and Rhodan engaged the monster and hurt it pretty badly, so it waved its ring at them and said "Make them go away". Spike and Rhodan were suddenly overcome with fear and fled from the room. Galen and Melody used Magic Missles and Studly attacked it before it died anyway. Gloin went running after Spike and Rhodan. When Rhodan chose to climb out and Spike chose to go down a tunnel, Gloin followed Rhodan up the ladder. Eventually, the "fear" ran out and left Spike and Rhodan upset by the encounter. They went back and rejoined the group. Galen picked up the Ring, and the ring introduced itself. It claimed to be powerful and to know all sorts of useful things. The Ring itself was a gold band with a black bat across 1/3 of its circumference. Furnes automatically distrusted the new Ring, and so the new Ring told everyone that Furnes' ring told lies or partial truths in order to mislead the group. Furnes tried to prove otherwise, but his questions played into the new Ring's story because Will indeed would not (could not?) answer the questions Furnes posed. Looking for Mister Key: (Dec 19, 696) The group then began a more systematic search of the current level. First, the decided to try the corridor with the dead slime. They were very careful about traps. The hall split three ways. Along the first path, the hall ended in a door which they could not open (wizard locked?). In the second, they found a section of floor which appeared to be a trigger to a trap. The roof over that area looked odd, too. Melody tried to climb walls to get past it, but fell onto the trigger area. Nothing happened. Melody got off the plate and other the other side, then Galen just walked right across... without triggering it either. Behind the door they found a library filled with lots of potentally valuable books, but the room was swarming with little spiders. Also, one corner was covered with webs. They decided to leave the room for later. In the third hall, Studly found a tripwire trap that some previous adventurer must have cut already. He then picked the lock on the door to let them into a laboratory. A thorough search discovered a Scroll with "Cloudkill", "Fumble", and "Remove Curse" at 14th level of casting ability. There was also another fight between the two ring-bearers and their Rings. They avoided the gemstone room and searched all the other directions before finding the key in a sauna room. Gloin got the key for them. Going Down: (Dec 19, 696) Using the key, they opened the stone door. When Galen walked in, a magic mouth said "Walk this way". When he did as directed, a Glyph blew up on him. Furnes healed him. After this, they were very careful going through the room. Nothing else happened. On the other side of the room was a shimmering curtain. Some tests showed that it seemed to be harmless, so Galen went through and the others followed. Furnes suspected that wearing the Ring Galen had would provide protection, but Galen would not let Furnes wear it and pulled Furnes through the curtain anyway. They then descended some stairs to the next level. Galen's Ring told them that going left or right would take them to the treasure. They went to the right and found a long corridor. When Studly went through the door, a magic mouth said "Watch your step... he he he". They were very paranoid going down the corridor. Studly checked each stone and placed copper coins where he stepped so others could follow him. Rhodan followed and opened the door to hear a shrill scream. Furnes reacted quickly and threw a Silence spell on the area. ADVENTURE NOTES--Day #17--07/23/93 Here Doggie Doggie: (Dec 19, 696) The scream turned out to be a Shrieker which Rhodan dispatched quickly (and excessively throughly :-). The rest of the party came up the corridor. Beyond the next door, they found 3 Dire Wolves. They killed them and decided to camp the night in the Shrieker room. Before going to sleep, Furnes placed a Fire Trap on the only door going deeper into the dungeon. Orcs? In Armor?: (Dec 20, 696) During the night, a band of very heavily armed and armored orcs attacked the group. They had camped in a room to which the orcs had a secret entrance. The group was pretty badly hurt in this encounter, but picked up some +1 Plate Mail, a +1 Shield, a +1 Ring of Protection and a +2 Cloak of Protection. When the battle was over they went through the secret door to check on how safe it was. Furnes got hit with a blade trap. They found that the orcs had a sleeping room and a set of arrow-slits facing into another room the characters would have had to go through. They camped in the orc chambers for the next day. Nobody Here but Us Orcs: (Dec 21, 696) During Spike's watch, an orc approached their area. Spike tried to stick him with a short sword through the arrow slit. The orc ran away without seeing his assailant. When the orc returned with some buddies, Melody did the talking for them in orcish. Apparently, their group was late in reporting back and getting off of watch duty. Melody told them off and got the rest of the party making grunting noises. The other orcs told them they'd be punished by doing another day's worth of watch duty! That suited the party just fine. They rested out the day. Fire Away: (Dec 22, 696) Once they were rested, they used the orc's own trap on them. Half of the group made a lot of noise at the far door and Melody yelled for re-enforcements. When orcs came running, Melody put a Flaming Sphere behind them, the archers fired arrows at them, and the rest of the party beat them up. Some remaining orcs locked the door, so Melody burned it down with the Sphere. Furnes cast Protection from Fire on Spike and Spike crashed through the Sphere and door into the orc's main chamber. The orcs had several balistas set up across a chasm. They hit Spike and knocked him down. Galen used a Fireball from his wand to destroy the orcs. Among the charred bodies they found a +1 shield and a +2 longsword. They spent quite a bit of time after that putting up some rope as a bridge, and using Galen's Levitate spell to bring across the heavy stuff. There was a door leading into a small room with two other doors. Behind one of the doors was only a stone wall. They tried closing the doors to see if anything would happen. Melody stayed in the orc room during this test. The chamber was actually an elevator of sorts. When in motion (which even the dwarf could not detect), the doors would not open. On each floor different doors opened to rooms or stone walls. They went back and got Melody. On the next floow down, they found the orc barracks room. It had more of the unmarked crates with supplies in them. There was also an odd opening in the wall. They spend the next day in the barracks after Furnes placed more Fire Traps on the door. How'd That Thing Get in Here: (Dec 24, 696) On the other side of the door was a corridor with yet another shimmering curtain in it. When moving through the curtain, all of the armor and items they picked up from the orcs produced drag. They had to force the items through. No one figured this effect out completely. At the end of the corridor was a room with a Chimera in it. The Chimara attacked them in the hallway and hurt them badly before it was killed. The treasure was worthwhile, though. It had: 7127 sp, 1232 ep, 250 pp, 2 large gems, a jeweled tiara, a +1 Dagger (+2 vs goblins) and a suit of Dwarf Field Plate. They went back and rested more in the barracks. ADVENTURE NOTES--Day #18--08/08/93 Things that Go BOOM in the Night: (Dec 24, 696) While resting in the barracks, they heard a loud whine as if something was approaching quickly. Suddenly, a crate came leaping out of the hole in the wall. Other crates followed. The hole was apparently a chute for providing food and water to the orcs working below. During that night a creature tripped the half-dozen Fire Traps that Furnes had placed on the door. The Wraith came in and said "The Master said you'd be here." Then it drained a life-level from Gloin (producing a hiddeous scream). The combined might of Galen and Melody's spells destroyed it though. Furnes was unable to turn it. Looking for the Treasure Room: (Dec 25, 696) In the morning, they went forward and through a rotating wall that Studly had discovered. They found the Wraith's lair and treasure: 8048 cp, 1983 sp, a Potion, and a +1 Footman's mace. They also found a room filled with Shadows. Furnes turned them and then they barred the door to that room shut. Studly found a trap, and Melody found a secret door for which there was no obvious trigger to open it with. Studly's testing of the trap tiggered the trap, which in turn opened the secret door. Finding a Vampire and Losing a Friend: (Dec 25, 696) Behind the door was a large room with a Vampire and 12 coffins with Skeletons in them. The Vampire laughed at them and the skeletons attacked. Furnes turned the Skeletons. Galen used Wall of Fire on the Vampire (and his wooden coffin!). The coffins appeared to create a new skeleton whenever one died, so Galen used another Wall of Fire on the coffins to destroy them. During this time, the party moved forward to fight the skeletons, however, leaving Gloin behind to guard the rear. Gloin was attacked by the Vampire and killed. The rest of the group noticed this. Rhodan and Spike charged to the rescue. The Vampire fought back with a short sword. Melody and Galen pounded him with spells, so the Vampire turned into a bat and fled out over the fire-wall (which was still burning). Furnes did not want the Vampire to get away, so he cast Protection from Fire on himself and charged into the flames to find the Vampire. He could not find it, so he began searching around. That was when he fell through the floor into a pit and went unconscious. About this time, the fire wall fizzled out. The party saw no sign of Furnes or the Vampire, but they did notice that a section of the floor was not burnt. It was an illusion like the one they fell through on the upper level. When Studly peered down, he saw the Vampire sticking Furnes with his short sword. Studly and Melody quickly climbed down to defend Furnes. The Vampire fled, but not before tiggering a mechanism which began making the floor slide away... revealing a 30 ft drop to molten lava! Melody and Studly worked quickly to get Furnes out. Spike and Rhodan helped out with ropes. This left Galen all alone to deal with the Vampire. Galen decided to try a long shot and used his Burning Hands power of his wand to shoot the bat down. It worked. The Vampire was killed and its ashes drifted down onto the floor. (Note that its coffin was destroyed earlier.) With the cleric out, they were in trouble. So, they decided to try the potion they found... the potion was in fact a Healing Potion which saved Furnes' life. Under the spot where the coffin was, they found a chest with: 1500 pp, 15 gems, a Ring of Temporal Stasis, 12 other rings, 2 Javelins of Lightning, a case with an Arrow of Cleric Slaying, a Scroll of "Cone of Cold", "Hold Monster" and "Wall of Stone", and a Scroll of "Spell Turning". The next issue was what to do about Gloin. Spike wanted to bring Gloin out and give him a proper dwarven burrial. Rhodan spoke up and told them that it might not be a good idea to bury the victim of a Vampire! Furnes then proposed a funeral pyre. They did not come to a decision at this time. So Where's the Loot: (Dec 25, 696) Galen's Ring then informed them that Galen would have to leap into the lava pit at one end of the room in order to release the magics which held the Crown and the Treasure hidden. It further assured him that he would not be hurt by doing this. Galen seemed to go for the idea and was getting ready to jump. Others in the group did not trust the ring. Along the way, the Ring did say that others could wear the Ring and still trigger the spell. Melody took the initiative and cast Sleep on Galen. She then took the Ring and put it on Gloin's dead body. They then lowered the body into the lava while Furnes and Spike said words for Gloin. The Ring yelled curses at them all the way down. When the body hit the lava, a spell was triggered which created a bridge of light over the lava and revealed a door on the far wall. Studly crept across and opened the door to reveal the treasure room. Spike was the first one in and he grabbed the Crown. Fearing that the bridge might not last, the group set up a line to get all the treasure out as-fast-as-possible. They got: The Crown, 503 pp, 1233 ep, 8565 sp, an emerald necklace, a Mace of Disruption, +4 Chain Mail, a Potion of Heroism, a Stone of Weight, and a +2 War Axe(+3 vs regenerating). They took what they could back to the barracks and rested for a couple of days. Getting Out: (Dec 27, 696) Feeling a little more rested, they began planning how to get out. Studly climbed the chute (passing through another mysterious curtain) to fresh air about 200 ft above. The chute was covered with a wooden hatch and was hidden in a clump of bushes at the base of the cliff on which the tower itself was situated. He went back and joined the group. They all crated up the best coinage and put all the most valuable items on their persons. Getting out was fairly easy. Galen used Levitate again to get across the chasm. They walked carefully on the coins Studly left in the one hallway and they made it all the way to the top. They spent the night in the top of the tower because winter had set in completely and it was very cold outside. Re-Claiming: (Dec 28, 696) In the morning they saw smoke back in the fortess. Someone had moved back in since they left, so the group approached carefully. Melody and Studly snuck up onto the roof and killed the guards. Then they went inside and took out a couple more before opening the door and letting the party in. The group quickly killed off the rest of the 10 orcs living in the tower. Once things were stable, they went down the the hatchway. Studly went down the chute and placed the various money crates on the ends of ropes. Rhodan and Spike hauled the crates up. They hid the crates in the bushes and spent the night in the fortress. The next day they went out looking for their cart and brought it up into the rough country. Their cart had not been damaged or stolen, but the horses were missing. The Long Road Home: (Dec 30, 696) By this time, Studly and Melody were both showing severe signs of poisoning. Furnes was casting as many Slow Poisons spells as he could. Without horses, Rhodan and Spike ended up pulling the wagon. At night, Furnes used Wyvern Watch and Everburning Log. It took them two and a half days to reach the road. At this point, Studly and Galen left on foot as fast as possible to Barrington. Studly was showing less effects of the poison. The two of them made it to town in 4 days. Galen had to almost drag him the last half day of travel. Studly was cured shortly after arrival. They spent the night in town and then bought horses and a Cure Poison Potion and raced back to the rest of the group. The main group was very short on morale and Melody was not up to her bardish ways. She slept much of the time. She was lucky that Studly and Galen arrived with the Cure Poison Potion when they did on January 8th. With horses, they made it back to town in two more days. Returning the Crown: (Jan 1, 697) In town, they rented a flat and rested up. Shortly after they arrived, a guy named Mack approached Galen in a tavern and said that Michael would not be back in town for another week. They did not ask much more of Mack except a few questions to ensure he did work for Michael. During the wait, Galen and the others had a stone made for Gloin and placed in the graveyard. When the week was up, Michael came to their flat. With a small ceremony, they gave him the Crown. He was extremely grateful and listened to their tale, including Gloin's death. They talked some more, and then the Prince left. He invited them back to join him when they wished. He also told them that there was a price on their head. Someone has hired the service of bounty hunters to bring them in. Dividing the Treasure: (Jan 18, 697) Well rested, the group made their way to Foxboro. They then had the various items they found identified. Needless to say they were pleasantly surprised... with the exception of the Stone of Weight and Ring of Timelessness. Studly took the +2 longsword and traded it for a +2 short shord. Melody traded the +1 Footman's Mace for a +1 short sword. Training: (Jan 25, 697) Most of the group then began training for 5th level (Galen trained for 4th). Galen also made a new spellbook for himself. Spike wrote a letter to Gloin's family. Furnes is researching the Rings. He also made a large sacrafice to Hastenzi to make up for the abuse of his healing abilities. THE FUTURE: It is now Mar 1, 697. The group promised to meet Prince Michael about this time. The trip to Mountain Lake appears to have been abandoned with Michael's cause and the coming of winter. Helping Michael can be done in many ways. Spike wants to deliver Gloin's personal items and an honorarium from the party to Spike's family near Mountain Lake. Spike also seems interested in seeking the Dwarven kingdom's aid for Prince Michael. Hadonis was not seen during this time, but Furnes is feeling pretty capable with his new armor, weapons, and Arrow of Cleric Slaying. There is a price on the group's head and with the breaking of winter word (and bounty hunters) may get around.
